my apologies for the late follow-up, i didn't have time until now to test
the new version of xfce4-panel. i just did, and unfortunately, X is still
killed when i do 'killall -USR1 xfce4-panel'.

if you want to pursue this, (i can live with it if you don't, i don't add
plugins regularly ;-) let me know what information i can provide.
