user interface mcs -- not making theme switch

I downloaded and installed xfce4 again today using the update-xfce
script -- my first time with the script. VERY handy!

However, I noticed that the User Interface Preferences isn't actually
effecting a theme switch when a new theme is chosen. 

I'm using xfce4 on a debian unstable box -- anybody else having problems
with this?

(I *can* change the theme using gtk-theme switch or ROX-Session [ if
and/or when I use ROX-Session ] )
