What is the way to check this compatibility?

I've got some full-screen problems with qiv and gaim. I was watching
pictures fullscreen, using qiv. Then a new icq message came to gaim.
Gaim is configured to raise the message window when a message arrives.
As no message windows was open at that time, a new one had to be
created.

The problem was, the display was switched to the desktop, showing all my
windows including the message window, but the mouse pointer was not
visible and keyboard focus was locked in qiv. I was unable to change the
keyboard focus using Alt-Tab. The first thing that came to my mind and
worked was quiting qiv using Esc.

I don't report this as a bug in xfwm4, but as a question what can be
investigated, and how.
