You don't like that new windows cover the panel or some other area? 
Just use the "Workspace Margins" component in the XFCE Settings Manager
customize the desktop margins.

You can use some keyboard shortcuts to start applications. To do this,
create a directory .themes/xfwm4/custom.keys/ in your home directory,
copy your system's keythemerc (from /usr/share/xfwm4/themes/default.keys/keythemerc)
to it, edit it with your favourite text editor (look at shortcut_4_key
and shortcut_4_exec at the bottom of the file) and choose that theme in
the "Window Manager" section of the settings manager.
