Thanks IIkka,
I have Xfce4 up and running now on SUSE8.2 :)
I found the file in /x11/ so I copied to /etc/opt/gnome2..................
and all works well. I usually use Debian but am trying out SuSe8.2  I think I 
will be returning to Debian however.
