N00b Questions

Folks, I just downloaded Xfce4 RC1 and I really like it. However, I
have a couple of n00b questions that I just can't seem to solve.
First, how do I get xfce4 to use my ~/.xfce4/xinitrc file? Looking at
the Xfce doc pages, I learned to copy /etc/xfce4/xinitrc to ~/.xfce4.
Great. Then, I looked at /usr/bin/startxfce4 and I see that it should
read ~/.xfce4/xinitrc which I have altered. Yet, for some reason it
won't. I'm trying to use the iconbox, so I added it to the xinitrc.
But, when I run startxfce4...no iconbox. Help me out please.
Second, I'm sure this is a FAQ, but is there a way to get the mailcheck
to read a remote IMAP mailbox?
Thanks for any help you can give this newbie.
