Ahah!! I was waiting for this one :)

Well, I dunno which distro you use, but it appears that it installs libtool
1.4.2 which is buggy (fyi, the last version of a well known Linux distribution
has this problem, and that leads to another question that pops up in my head, I
wonder how -and if- the people who make such distributions build their packages
on the distribution itself...)

Anyway, either edit libtool in the source dir and add

SED="/bin/sed" 

at the begining, just before the line with "Xsed=" or upgrade to libtool 1.4.3
that fixes that bug.

Then simply redo make. That works.
