Hmmm ... here's another clue: This instant shutdown thingy doesn't
happen when I am not running gnome-session.

BTW, should I commit the DBG() statements? Perhaps after renaming them
to TRACE(). Then we can selectively switch them off.

They are either very useful or incredibly irritating (depending on your
point of view).
