well -- the screen lights a bit, and I can re-theme between 
Gnome and xfce4 themeing.  I copied and tweeked the xfce gdm 
entry to start xfce4 instead from the Session chooser.

knowing where to place .xfce4rc would help.  A conversion
script to look for and migrate xfce files would be nice.

I bumbled about for a bit ... I could not see where the 
desktop backgound setting control was; the cursor did not ever 
leave hourglass.  But no crash.
