Here are some features i thought about for xfce4.

1) use another document-type for backdrop: HTML or XML, which is far more flexible

2) use a window-maker style for applying icons: a collection of dirs with icons
   then selection an icon gives a list of all icons, with preview image

3) using one configuration file for all items, XML preferred, this implies that the lnaguage specific
   namings no longer exist in the config files: using variables for config items, 
   then linking those vars to language files
