xfce4: Rightclick on system-button: nothing happens

I suppose it is. gkrellm with all its plugins works fine.  The xfce4
plugins are placed by install at /usr/local/lib/xfce4/plugins. I have no
idea how plugins work so I haven't the slightest clue as to why they
don't show. What should I look for?
