Can't start from ligntdm

Got all those deleted and .Xauthority too.
Also have two fresh user profiles.  No symptom
change.

I have got it to the point where if lightdm is stopped,
I can start xfce with startxfce4.  MATE (mate-session)
still tells me is can't find the display.

I can start xfce whenever I want with startx.

On the bright side, I now know what the problem is
officially called:  "lightdm infinite login loop".

No idea what is causing the MATE issue, except the
      Failed to start systemd-sysuses.service
error message, but that might be left over from boot.

Setting /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf to

     [Seat:*]
     session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession

Did not help.
