thanks again for your help.
Yes, I had already added xfce4-session in the session part of
autostare in wayfire.ini.
Without workspaces I don't think I'll be using xfce with wayland.
I'm used to having one firefox (ESR) on the first workspace,
epiphany on the second, another firefox (stable), on the third and
xfce-terminals scattered all over the workspaces.
More generally, I suspect I either built something in the wrong
sequence (I assumed I had installed xwayland befor I started, but
had not built it on that machine, did not notice it missing until I
started on compositors after completing the 4.20pre packages), or
else (using elogind, not systemd, with seatd using elogind) I need
to add a bootscript for something to get logout working.
So, wayfire was a waste of time. I live and learn. :-)
