Thanks.  I suspect my google results were perhaps skewed by
searching on a different machine where I'd been down rabbit holes
related to something else entirely.  And yes, maybe only the panel
needs it - but I find the panel plugins very useful.

The Arch, or aur, pages I had looked at definitely seemed to be
using a git version.

Anyway, I managed to get to fedora rawhide (tarball name, SHA512
sum, and patch re disabling Werror) and a search then led me to that
launchpad site - this time I managed to get 16.04.0,

That package is now built and passes all it tests (needs
dbus-test-runner and the usual rats' nest of Python modules).
