Terminal doesn't display oblique/italic any more

I have an oblique typeface selected in my terminal preferences (DejaVu
Sans Mono Oblique) and it always used to work OK but now it just
displays as an ordinary upright typeface.

No other oblique/italic typeface works either.

This always used to work though I'm not quite sure when it stopped
working, I *think* it stopped working when I upgraded from xubuntu
21.04 to 21.10 but it might have been before that.

How can I get my sloping typeface back?
