Well you need to sort that out rather than adding extra complications
like .xprofile IMHO.

Personally I'd go back to basics.  Remove (or rename) .bash_profile,
then put something detectable in .profile and reboot to see if it's
executed.  If it isn't then you need to dig further to find out why.
