I have still not found the reason for the difference. It seems to
affect almost nobody. I spent some time googling and only found one
instance of someone talking about the same problem as I have: a Ubuntu
user in June, and apparently he has not found a solution either.

One thing I forgot to mention in my description above is that the PC
where the wallpaper is displayed as expected has Intel graphics and
three monitors attached, whereas that where I get the dark blue-gray
background has Nvidia graphics with the proprietary driver and two
monitors. I don't think how this could have an effect though.
Any ideas of how I could investigate this?
