Workspace switcher on panel a mess

The transparency effect happened when I came out of suspend and for the 
1st time since booting, I was attached to an external monitor. The 
laptop screen kind of flashed, then the external monitor came live, 
mirroring the notebook monitor, but with the workspace switcher as you see.
