I wondered about this and think it's something with xfce4 on 64-bit
systems. I have two portables running Slackware-14.2/x86_64 and neither will
load ~/.Xmodmap when I start X. However, this has never been an issue on the
32-bit systems.

Kernels prior to 4.4.9 did not support this cpu so I upgraded to the
4.14.x series which does support it. Perhaps Xfce4 has issues with it or the
graphics card, but everything displays properly.

Puzzling. Hope I can get these issues fixed quickly.
