This can be done in the file $HOME/.gtkrc-2.0
I currently use these settings to achieve narrow spacing:
/--------------------------------
style "xfdesktop-icon-view" {
XfdesktopIconView::label-alpha = 0
XfdesktopIconView::cell-spacing = 0
XfdesktopIconView::cell-text-width-proportion = 1.3
base[NORMAL] = "#ffffff"
base[SELECTED] = "#5D97D1"
base[ACTIVE] = "#5D97D1"

fg[NORMAL] = "#ffffff"
fg[SELECTED] = "#ffffff"
fg[ACTIVE] = "#ffffff"
}
widget_class "*XfdesktopIconView*" style "xfdesktop-icon-view"
\--------------------------------

When experimenting, I use this command to initiate to reload the
desktop:
	pkill -HUP xfdesktop
