no more xsnow

With XFCE 4.12 (xubuntu 16.04) my most important program (for december) is
not working any more: xsnow

The program starts, but no snowflakes are visable and Santa
disappears after a few seconds.

I have tested it with a solid desktop background colour and disabled
display compositing with no change.

With XFCE 4.8 (xubuntu 12.04) everything was fine.
