No unseen notifications icon and history

  Hello!
  As I remember, in the past the notification-daemon used to show the
envelope icon in the notifications area until I click on it and clear
the notifications. However, some months ago I noticed that it does not
show this icon any more, so I cannot see the missed notifications.
  Is there a way to get that old behaviour back in order to be able to
see the notifications which appeared on the screen when I was absent?
