Configuration conpletly lost after unclean shutdown

Hi,

I've experienced a loss of the complete xfce configuration after an
unclean shutdown, and recently only of the whiskers menu (using btrfs,
which uses delayed allocation).
Today I was hiking with a friend of mine using ext4, and he had the
same issue on a netbook - where the whole xfce desktop configuration
was lost after a sudden power down.

It seems like xfce is using some combination of ftrucate+rewrite to
modify its configuration files, which leads to zero-length files as
both operations aren't atomic.
I did a quick search for the parts to blame, however wasn't able to find it.

Therefore I would be grateful if somebody could point me to the
functions which are responsible for xfce's config file handling.

Thank you in advance, Clemens
