Unlikely that Hartmut has got an encrypted swap.

Hartmut:

- Regarding to your HDD, you could start by posting the output of
  $ sudo smartctl -a /dev/... , e.g. $ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda

- Follow Lars and get rid of GVFS
