Xfce is very, very, very slow

If nothing is shown by top I would check if the hardware is ok. Without
messages that the battery of a PC reached the end of life, it anyway
could be empty and cause strange issues. I really mean the battery that
e.g. powers the clock, not a laptop rechargeable battery. More likely a
hard disk drive reached the end of life.

It might be not related to hardware, so I would take a look at all
available log files, starting with ~/.xsession-errors.
