The mixer. Try to launch xfce4-mixer, then select all controls and
then check if any are muted. Sometimes even if they seem not muted,
try to disable/enable to make sure they work as advertised.  Sometimes
you also have switches that control some functionality check those,
too. If all else fails, I usually doublecheck with alsamixer from the
CLI.
