I've had a prod at this, and it might be a bug in exo.
Using [1] as a guide, I checked what was going on;
cat ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
[Added Associations]
x-scheme-handler/http=exo-web-browser.desktop
x-scheme-handler/https=exo-web-browser.desktop
...
[Default Applications]
# HTTP not listed
xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/http
firefox.desktop firefox.desktop
Thunderbird opens links in firefox, even if the preferred app is Midori.
Doing
xdg-mime default exo-web-browser.desktop x-scheme-handler/http
xdg-mime default exo-web-browser.desktop x-scheme-handler/https
cat ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
[Added Associations]
x-scheme-handler/http=exo-web-browser.desktop
x-scheme-handler/https=exo-web-browser.desktop
...
[Default Applications]
x-scheme-handler/http=exo-web-browser.desktop
x-scheme-handler/https=exo-web-browser.desktop
Now thunderbird opens HTTP links in the preferred browser. I'm guessing
that the [Added Associations] also needs something in [Default
Applications] to work properly (as there seems to be duplication for
handling of RSS/Atom feeds).
Theres a tangentially related bug [2], it might be worthwhile commenting
on, or opening a new bug.
Hope this helps.
