It depends. Most probably it won't. You have two ways to go:

1. Compile/install directly from the source. This needs tailoring the
configure script according to all the file locations which the
Ubuntu/Debian maintainers have changed.

2. Creating a .deb package, with the actual package as a starting
point.

Take a look into the .deb package which is installed on your system,
and find out which paths are changed. Then, take a look into the
configure script in the sourcetree and find out how to change
them. Shouldn't be all too hard..
