Desktops disappear after start

Hi,
once in a month the desktops disappear after start, i. e. there is only 
one left, the windows have no frames etc. I repair that in a terminal 
with "xfwm4 --replace &", and adjust the number of desktops afterwards. 
But I wonder why this error happens at all. (ubuntu 12.04 + xfce 4.8.0.3)
