Power management: How to not idle the monitor while viewing a movie?

At least for mplayer, it's very easy to configure it to stop entering 
screensave (and thus powersave) mode while you're watching a movie. This 
is what I have in ~/.mplayer/config: heartbeat-cmd = "xdg-screensaver reset"

xdg-screensaver utility comes from xdg-utils package, but there are also 
other ways to accomplish the same thing by calling your specific 
screensaver directly (xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver etc...).

As I'm not using vlc very often, I don't know how to configure the same 
thing, maybe somebody else can help with vlc.
