strange printer installation problem

Sorry for the delay in posting back on this one. As to your questions, 
yes to both.

The strange thing is that when I sat down to try to follow Silvio's 
suggestion, the printer had appeared (and on 192.168.1.99, port 9100, 
not the localhost address Silvio gave me). Thereafter, it's worked 
just fine.

I have absolutely no idea what happened, but it seems that the process 
got far enough to have installed the printer before it hung.
