Items appearing in the Launcher -> Add New Item

Hi,

I have added a bunch of .desktop files for local applications to
/usr/local/share/applications/. These show up in the menus and in
the "Application Search". But they do not appear in the "Launcher ->
Add New Item" dialog.

How can I make the applications appear in that dialog?

I'm using Xfce 4.8 from EPEL on RHEL6.
