Your screenshot shows that while the panel has been rotated vertically, 
the label is still printed horizontally. That's actually how it should 
be in deskbar mode.

Lara Michaels expects it to be printed vertically, not horizontally, 
because that's what it should do in vertical mode. For more information 
read the panel plugins HIG in the xfce wiki.

Compare the xfce4-datetime-plugin to the internal clock plugin to see 
the difference.
