I wholeheartedly agree, the author of lightdm has abandoned maintenance of the gtk-greeter, "officially" the Xubuntu team has taken over, but we really don't have the manpower for real maintenance. If you wanna maintain and/or develop the greeter, that would be great. Feel free to get in touch with us either on the xubuntu-devel mailinglist or in #xubuntu-devel on irc.freenode.org
