The issue with xdm appears to be a known issue:

I don't have an xdm fix for you, but you might consider using lxdm
instead until someone else sorts it out.  It won't pull as many
dependencies as kdm or gdm and in my opinion it's more stable and has
more features than slim.

regarding item #2, try clearing ~/.cache/sessions.  If that fails, my
next step would be to back up ~/.config, then clear it, check that you
can boot back into Xfce without issue, and start selectively replacing
things from your backup.
