XFCE problems.

I am in the process of copying files from an old disk to a new
computer. Using XFCE multiple problems occur as the copying continues.
1. At some point xdm gets caught in a loop. I get a sign on window, I
sign on, and the sign on window just reappears. kdm doesn't get caught
in the loop. I had this problem on the old computer too, after using
xdm for some months.
2. at some later point, using kdm and my usual login name I get to XFCE
but I get an error message saying "Cannot find failsafe session...", and
a long list of things to check. but if I use another signon name things
work OK.
I truly hate KDE4, and the other options such as fvwm and blackbox are
too limited. Clearly the copying process has jammed the gears at some
point. My new computer can't handle the old drive which is too thick.
If someone can point me to a file in my personal directory that is
causing problem 2 I would be most grateful.
At this moment I am using KDE and hating every minute of it.
Slackware 13.37.
