4.10 No Trash, No Removable Devices Icons

I have recently installed Xfce 4.10, built from the tarballs, on my 
Slackware 13.37 system, and it works very well, however I have no Trash 
nor Removable Devices icons on the desktop although they are enabled in 
Desktop Settings. When I install a trash panel plugin I get the red 
circle with the white bar.

I have installed gvfs (from sbopkg) and it appears to work, at least the 
gvfs apps (gvfs-tree, etc.) seem to work, but I don't know if it is 
working properly.

What am I missing?
