As I understand it :
At release of Xubuntu 11.10, gvfs-backends wasn't a part of the 
meta-package xubuntu-desktop nor the ISOs (a one-time unusual bug).

The meta-package has beeen fixed since. The update manager should have 
installed it when applying system updates.
