I'm running Xfce 4.6 still and I don't frequently capture audio, but 4 out of
5 times when I have trouble, it seems to be an issue with my mixer settings
(i.e. not an Xfce issue).

When you're recording, are you getting appropriate indications on the 'Sound
Recorder' app's "Level:" graphic (in the lower right corner)? If not, I'd
open the app's "Volume Control" window (i.e. the mixer) and start playing with
the settings, unmuting and maximizing the sliders for all "Recording" channels
and tweaking your "Input Source" setting to each available value and trying
again (and again... and again...). If that works, you may, of course, have to
tweak the settings again to lower the gain to avoid clipping in your
recording. Since everyone's audio hardware is a bit different, it's hard to be
very specific here.

Hope that helps a bit without insulting your intelligence (if you've already
tried any/all of that). Audio recording is always a pain for me because I do
it so infrequently and it seems to require different gyrations every time! :^)

Good luck!
