Problems with recording.

All,

This is the first time I've tried an audio capture from this distro 
(LMDE/XFCE). I'm trying to use 'Sound Recorder'.  It seems to record, 
and I can save the file, but on replay, there's no sound at all.  I can 
play existing sound files fine.  "Open Volume Control" gives:

"gnome-volume-control is not installed on the path"

Audacity won't record either, gives:

"cannot control input volume, use system mixer"


Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if it's an Xfce problem tho.
