Also, in /usr/share/applications, there are a zillion files like:

libreoffice-writer.desktop.~1~

... what are these? They look killable to me.

I've often wondered how to do that.  I use Debian, so what tool do I 
use? Synaptic doesn't seem to have any such feature.
