I'm facing a similar problem on Debian Wheezy with XFCE 4.8, no display
manager (I start xfce with startx),
In my case, not only automount (which worked perfectly until a few days
ago) has stopped working but also any mention to other partitions and
external drives in the 'shortcuts', in both Thunar and Gtk applications
has disappeared.

Here, thunar (and any other Gtk application with an open/save dialog) is
generating this message which seems related to GVFS:
GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: invoking IsSupported() failed for
remote volume monitor with dbus name org.gtk.Private.GduVolumeMonitor:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildSignaled: Process
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor received signal 6
Not sure exactly what this is related to, though.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
Lorenzo.
