How possible preferred applications identified?

I am not exactly sure about it. But the application categories comes 
with the desktop file for application, for example ( 
/usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop ) is for firefox in arch linux. 
You can select "other" option and specify the binary, if the application 
is not listed there.
