Shutdown on Salix

I run xfce on Salix, a Slackware derivative. I start xfce 
through a menu choice which comes up when kdm is booted. If 
I leave the resolution alone the shutdown choice works OK. 
but is I decrease resolution via
xrandr -s 3
then the shutdown choice just stalls. I have to switch to a 
regular console and do 
<ctrl><alt><delete>
