On a side note, if you recompile plugins against this version that do
not have a transparent background on a composited panel; there is a
good change that is resolved.

This is how the hack works: the code embedded in the plugin macro,
which is in libxfce4panel 4.8.1, checks if the first child of the
panel plugin is an event box and if so, the visible window of the
event box is hidden with gtk_event_box_set_visible_window().
