xfdesktop in a cron job

Regular user. I also did:
* * * * * whoami > /tmp/test.txt

and the outcome was the identical user as I had before.

On a perhaps unrelated level, I get a segmentation error with :
houghi at penne : xfce4-session-settings 
Segmentation fault

The error message is:
