Starting the panel automatically

Alt+F2, then run "xfce4-panel", the logout and check the save session
tickbox (make sure nothing else is running, apps, etc), logout, log
back in and it should be up and running.

If not you can always add it to auto-started applications. Not sure
which is the "proper" way to do it, as they seem like two different
ways of doing the same thing.
