If I read the initial post, I believe it is that the menu and places
plugins (external plugins) disappeared. The fact could be that they
crashed but the panel not and got time to save its configuration
without them and it's a problem that I saw more than once. You will
have to add these items back into the panel on your behalf. Right
click the panel to get the context menu with the "Add item..." entry.
Choose the plugins from the window and drag-n-drop them to your panel.
