Hi David,

   It means that XFce does not start.  Instead you get gdm
user log on screen, which will log into XFce after
the username and password are entered.

Now, whether or not XFce tried and failed or gdm
never tried at all, I can not tell.  A line by line
check of /var/log/message found no entries from gdm or
XFce.
