no automount; hybernate

hi list,

i've recently installed xfce 4.6.0 (slackware 12.2, package provided by
robby workman) and am running into a few small issues, two of which i'd
like to ask about here:

* on my eeepc, which has a fresh install of slack 12.2 and xfce 4.6.0,
automounting does not work. thunar-volman-plugin is installed and
configured to automount removable devices, and my user is a member of the
plugdev group. still, nothing happens when i insert a usb drive, usb
stick or sd card. i can mount devices manually, though.

since i have no idea where to look to troubleshoot this (i'm not even
sure how automounting works exactly...) i'd appreciate some tips on what
  to check/look for.

* when i quit xfce, i get the logout window, which has the options
hybernate and suspend active. if i select one of them, i get an error
message saying "suspend and hybernate are only available through HAL,
which is unavailable". hald is running, however. (this occurs on my home
machine, which runs slackware 12.2 updated from 12.1, but also on said
  eeepc.)

again, i'm not sure where to look to troubleshoot this, so any tips would
  be welcome.

TIA

joost
